In terms of geography, Lake Austin is part of the Highland Lakes system, which includes Lake Travis and Lake Buchanan among other smaller lakes. The Highland Lakes system runs southeast through Central Texas and is dammed periodically to prevent damaging floods. Because it is dammed, Lake Austin resembles a “river” more so than a lake - which technically, it is. However, Austinites have been referring to it as Lake Austin, Ladybird Lake, or Town Lake for years.

The Highland Lakes dam system has been working since the 30s and 40s and was constructed to mitigate flooding of the city’s electrical system and also provide more recreation spots for locals. These days, there’s hardly a day that goes by where you don’t seen hundreds of paddle-boarders, canoe-ers, and - yes - even fishermen taking advantage of the city’s attraction.

All the water in Lake Austin is fed by Lake Travis, but since it is moving, it is typically cooler in temperature than what you’ll find on Lake Travis, but nothing that would be dangerous to enjoy year-round, as long as you have the right equipment.

With so many benefits, attractions, and amazing real estate options, it’s really no surprise that Lake Austin homes for sale are some of the hottest in Austin, TX.
